Marmaris Castle and Archaeology Museum

Marmaris Castle is the city’s oldest landmark and it’s one of the most popular things to do in Marmaris.

Not only is it incredibly interesting, it’s culturally rich and it forms a significant part of the resort city’s history.

It’s among the few castles in Turkey that boast of an in-house museum and is nestled on top of a grassy hilltop above the pretty marina.

It’s thought the castle was first built by the Ionians around 1044 BC and later repaired during the era of Alexander the Great.

The castle is a quintessential example of the noble past of Marmaris. We’d recommend carving out two to three hours to explore the castle and to see the museum in its entirety.

There’s a great selection of exhibits and artefacts that offer a thrilling insight into the past of the Ottoman Empire.

If you are on a flying visit and don’t have lots of time to dedicate to your things to do in Marmaris list then have a hop and a skip around the castle and admire the stunning views of the surrounding area!
