It’s fair to say Alaska’s a little outdoorsy. A wilderness like no other, where vast stretches of mountain crags go untouched save for the foraging animals all looking to survive in the harsh climate. Yes, spring and summer bring a touch of sunshine – and cruise ships, but you needn’t be troubled with their hop on, hop off approach to Alaska holidays where you’re going. You’ll be too busy driving Alaska’s never-ending highways, seeing a glacier calve from the air, musing over just how much more magical the mountains look in the midnight sun and watching bears catch slippery salmon on a riverbank. You will want to take to the waters at some point too. Perhaps checking out miniature icebergs in a searingly picturesque fjord? More likely, you’ll be cooing over the cuteness of sea otters while you’re waiting for a humpback to breach on the surface.

Maybe you’re more in the market for the adrenaline kick those early gold rush miners were after? Follow their journey on a railroad that’s been winding through the same mountain valleys since the 1890s or join the prospectors still panning for gold. In Alaska, you’ll want to do it all. Just remember to look up now and then. When the sun does go down? The Northern Lights do the impossible. They make Alaska that little bit more beautiful.

Weather in Alaska

Well, this is a tricky one. The best time to visit Alaska? That all depends on your activity schedule. To bag everything from warm days and optimal bear viewing with festivals and fewer mosquitos, drop by in late July. For 600+ inches of snow? Go for March.

Discover the real Alaska

Some might say the real Alaska can’t be found on an episode of Ice Road Truckers. But we disagree, the rugged terrain and inhospitable climate makes life hard for those not just dipping in for a fortnight of foraging and fjord roaming. Spend a night in a public access cabin to experience the real deal.

Rarely will you be far from bears in Alaska. Or a whale, seal, caribou or moose. But that doesn’t mean your entire trip need revolve around wildlife. Mountain hikes, flightseeing, skiing, sea kayaking and exploring more than a few ghost towns are just as appealing. Embrace every bit of this wild state.

Alaskans don’t shy away from hunting, foraging and fishing their way to the dinner table. For the squeamish, you’ll do well to stick to the salmon, crab and berries side of the menu. Elsewhere, whale, moose, reindeer and bear do grace the tables. The seafood restaurants are the real gems.

Where do you even begin exploring Alaska? Just one of its national parks has 6 million acres under its protected belt. These are the kind of stats you’ll be faced with planning a holiday to Alaska. Daunting? It needn’t be. We’re here to help you with every bit of essential Alaskan intel.
