Milan Travel Guide

Being fashion-forward and first to the hottest new trends attracts a certain crowd to Milan. To say they’re cosmopolitan, bustling and keen to snack on sushi would be a sweeping generalisation, but you’ll see why when you hit the streets. Asian gastro-influences have snuck into menus from brunch ’til midnight – this is a city that likes to eat late. And cocktails, craft beers and botanicals are edging out Italy’s Soave on the drinks menu. Though, so far, the galleries are clinging onto their masterpieces by the greats. You can, of course, hop on a walking tour of the city to take in works by the next generation of celebrated artists, though these tend to be spray painted rather than crafted from oils and watercolours.

Though, let’s not forget, Leonardo da Vinci’s most memorable piece was daubed on a wall rather than a canvas, so there’s something historic to be found in the murals too. Straying away from Milan’s art and food for a moment, though, really, why would you want to? Bring your deepest pockets for a revamp of your entire wardrobe. There’s a wealth of aperitivo options waiting to revive you, if not your wallet, when the shops close.

Weather in Milan

Milan’s main attractions are year-round. But when you do stray into the parks and cosmopolitan streets, you’ll want a little sun. Spring sees the city at its best. Summer can get a little too toasty for schlepping. Autumn’s just grand for pavement-side cafe culture. And winter? The best time to visit Milan for Christmas shopping.

Discover the real Milan

You might not expect to find the real Milan in a shopping mall, but this city’s long been fond of new ways to trade. The Naviglio Grande canal opened up trade routes with Switzerland way back in the 14th century, so feel no shame in buying big brands in grand places while you get the chance.

Every city has its must-sees. And Milan is no different. But take time away from the iconic and towering Duomo to track down Milan’s hidden gems too. Speakeasy bars and rebellious sculptures take a little finding, but worth adding to Milan’s masterpieces, shopping scene and lingering looks at the Last Supper.

There are plenty of opportunities to sample Italy’s rich cuisine. From the antipasti and full-bodied reds of the aperitivo hours to rustic pizzas and sublime seafood. But, Milan’s also ushered in a more cosmopolitan menu too. Expect sushi, gourmet brunches and plant-based innovation to lure you away from the enduring appeal of a perfectly made margherita.

Milan’s multitude of shopping venues alone will leave your head spinning. In this chic and sprawling city, having a few pointers on everything from where to pick up the best branded bargains to which nightclub to rub shoulders with the A-list crowd goes a long way.

More of Italy

In Italy, it’s hard to choose between a road trip along the Amalfi Coast, a countryside romp through Tuscany or a culture-packed city break in Rome. Of course, the answer should be to do all three. Except, you’ll have to add in time on the glorious island of Sicily, cruising along Italy’s lakes and alpine thrills in the mountains. That’s before you’ve even considered a casual look at Umbria, Naples and Florence. The FOMO is real.
