Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way, shall we? The Big 5 is what most of us are all looking for when we tip-tap Kenya into our browsers. And, we’ll not get in your way. Awe-inspiring, emotive, captivating. A holiday to Kenya would be almost empty without those big, big sightings. But that does rather belittle the magic of watching a herd of zebra graze or a pack of hyenas pick over an abandoned meal. The wildlife to see in this country borders on the ridiculous. So please. Do check out the 90 other mammals that trot nimbly between the hills and plains. And the 500+ species of bird are worth a look. As is the marine life, if you find yourself on the coast.

And, to be frank, you really should try to get there. For decades, there’s been a steady stream of visitors to Kenya’s beaches. And yet, few sought fit to notify travellers in the UK of just how marvellous those beaches are. Consider this YOUR notification. Ignore it at your travel peril. Hiking, hot-air ballooning, horse-riding, boating on lakes. All champion options on any trip – in Kenya, it’s just another way to spot the wildlife.

Let’s talk seasons

You’re looking at four main seasons in Kenya. Two dry seasons and two wet seasons. The best time to visit Kenya? If you’re looking for wildlife – hit those dry seasons. The clouds disappear from January to March and July to September.

Discover the Real Kenya

The real Kenya plays out on the savannah every day. Every lion’s roar, every vulture-huddled carcass. It’s all there in its raw glory. Whether you wander the grasslands with a Maasi tribe member or bobble across it in a 4×4 is up to you, of course. But there are fewer countries where the realness is so accessible.

Safaris are always going to grab most of the headlines when it comes to activities. But, even while you’re exploring the grasslands, there’s much more to do than peer through binoculars. There’s a rich seam of archaeological history to dig into. Mysterious ruins, Maasai markets and green, green hills are just the starting point for Kenya adventures.

Western fast food, has crept into Kenya and marred the menu. For the more adventurous taste buds, expect traditional stews, unusual ales and a barbecue on just about every corner. There’s a surprising amount of ‘accidentally’ plant-based recipes to tuck into. There’s no shortage of opportunities to try the ugali. So go steady, it’s a staple on every menu.

The multitude of options doesn’t make cherrypicking the best bits of Kenya easy. A clutch of national parks, many mountains to climb, intriguing nooks and crannies to snuffle out. It’s got the lot. You’ll need a few tips (at least) to get you to the best bits hassle free. Handy then that we’ve got a few lined up.

More of Africa

Roam over extraordinary landscapes, sip your way along the wine route, tick off more wildlife than your notebook can handle and peer at coastlines that just don’t quit. Africa isn’t short on experiences, you just need to name them. Climb peaks, learn from indigenous tribes, sail on lakes so large they mimic the ocean or just luxe it out on an island idyll. Oh and always safari, even if it’s just a little. There’s so much to see.
