An idyllic location on the banks of the Red Sea that’s just as steeped in history as it is natural splendour, Sharm el-Sheikh has long been a favoured destination to get a little R&R. Without a doubt it is  the jewel of Egypt’s beach holiday hotspots. The city has everything you could want from a seaside getaway, from gentle, warm seas lapping at your feet to unmissable bars overlooking the long stretches of sand, where you can enjoy a cocktail or four.

If you’re more of an active holiday maker, you’re going to find a Sharm el-Sheikh trip fulfils all your needs too. From day excursions into Egypt’s mountainous interior, where you can discover some challenging hiking trails and watch sand dunes shift, to the plethora of water sports on offer around the beaches, you can spend your days working up a sweat to make that evening beer taste even more refreshing than you thought possible. And, of course, like most major cities in Egypt there are some great historical sites and museums to explore, where you can learn about the Pharaohs and Sheikh’s who ruled this land.

Sun, sun and more sun in Sharm

Subtropical, dry, and warm year-round, Sharm el-Sheikh is an ideal destination regardless of the time of year. With that said, in the summer the heat is absolutely scorching, meaning the middle of the day is a time to be inside or at least in shade most of the time. However, this also means the Red Sea remains warm year-round, so if you’re keen to splash around or give water sports a try, it’s always a good time. Even night time is balmy here, with evenings regularly staying in the ‘British Summer Time’ range.

Discover the Real Sharm el-Sheikh

Sharm el-Sheikh may have been a thriving tourist destination for years now, but that doesn’t mean everything is solely for the visitors who come here to slap on sunscreen and lounge by the sea. There’s plenty to do here beyond taking in the Red Sea surroundings, whether you love museums and galleries, discovering how the locals live, or prefer secluded walks over busy beaches. Whilst we’d never tell anyone to miss out on the beaches if that’s what they want to do, we’ve made sure that our suggestions give you a taste of the real Sharm el-Sheikh, and not just another tourist trail to follow.

Yes, you can easily spend your entire holiday here soaking up the sun, but if you are keen to get your feet and mind moving, then Sharm el-Sheikh offers so much more. From expansive nature reserves, to gorgeous light shows to be wowed by, the Egyptian coastal city is jam packed with things to see and do. And that’s before we discuss the incredible architecture on show, as well as the day-excursions to other parts of the region that are readily available for visitors to enjoy.

Sharm el-Sheikh is blessed with some outstanding places to eat and drink. High-end beach bars sit alongside tiny cafes where locals sip tea late into the night, and there’s a wonderful blend of local dishes to try alongside international cuisine delivered to the highest standards, thanks to all the world-class chefs who have made  their home here. While drinking isn’t always doable in every part of Egypt, you’ll find Sharm el-Sheikh is incredibly relaxed, and almost everywhere will offer an excellent range of wines and beers, and some lip-smacking cocktails.

Some things to see and do in this seaside city are tourist hotspots because they’re worth it, but there are also plenty of hidden gems in Sharm el-Sheikh that can surprise and inspire that are a little off the beaten track. Make sure to see incredible structures like The Heavenly Cathedral, but don’t be afraid to try something new. We’ve wandered through winding alleyways and had a gab with the locals to make sure our guides and tips deliver the best Sharm el-Sheikh experience you could wish for.

More of Italy

In Italy, culture, history and architecture are only really interrupted by couture, cuisine and a countryside peppered with vines and olive groves. Italy is a feast in every sense. Gorge on crumbling, coastal villages that effuse the kind of well-worn glamour we’d all love to cling to in advancing years. And tuck into cosmopolitan cities, where you’re never far from Roman icons, art-stuffed museums and achingly hip aperitivo crowds.
