Look, we’re not saying Riviera Maya is a paradise, but when you’ve got sizzling heat, azure seas and skies, and access to near-enough every creature comfort you could wish for, then we’re not entirely sure we can claim this little slice of Eden is anything less than that. Renamed in 1999 to attract more tourism to the region from big brother Cancun up North, it’s likely that move wasn’t necessary, although the name has stuck: all the locals really needed to sell this place was to let us in, and then, it speaks for itself.
Although primarily seen as an ‘all-inclusive’ destination, there’s still tonnes to do if you can’t stand the thought of lounging around like a beach bum: exploring ancient ruins, spotting whale sharks, and diving into cenotes are just some of the exciting activities on offer in this astoundingly beautiful corner of Mexico. However, if you are looking for a more pampered experience, then there isn’t anywhere better to head, with a whole host of luxury resorts with wonderful amenities at your fingertips when you come to Riviera Maya.

Weather in Riviera Maya
The climate in Riviera Maya is similar to the more known Cancun, although it has the benefit of usually being shielded from the worst of the rainy season as storms tend to track north towards Cancun or south to Tulum when they hit land. With that said, the dry season is usually December to May, although even in the rainy season there are plenty of sunny days. Importantly, the sea temperature remains quite warm year-round, so it’s always good for a dip.
Discover the real Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya is packed full of amenities, and generally hotels and businesses are catered to all-inclusive visitors. With that said, there’s still plenty of authentic Mexican experiences on offer here, both culturally and in terms of wildlife excursions, so if you are looking to step out and try something new, there’s opportunity to do so. From the ruins of Tulum to snorkelling in one of the most bio-diverse marine parks in the world, there are hundreds of real experiences we at Orbzii know you’ll love – all you have to do is figure out which ones are for you.
While there’s nothing wrong with lounging by the sea (in fact, we’d argue there’s plenty right with it), you might get a little antsy if left to twiddle your thumbs for too long – maybe a little sunburnt too. We at Orbzii have snooped around to figure out the best things to see and do in this corner of Quintana Roo, and although it can be a daunting experience to try something new in a foreign country, safety is a priority for us, so that’s one thing you can tick off the worry list.
Riviera Maya is home to an enormous number of great restaurants and bars, spanning all kinds of cuisines, all to a world class standard. Many of the resorts have multiple restaurants inside, usually preparing pan-European dishes, often buffet-style as opposed to a la carte. However, there’s also a whole new world of local fare available, usually cheaply, which we’d heavily recommend – especially if your only experience with Mexican food is burritos or tacos.
While we’d never say any place has too much to do, it can be daunting to pick and choose how you want to spend your hard-earned free time. With Orbzii, you’ll know what’s worth seeing in Riviera Maya, and what less than stellar experiences can be left to the other tourists.

More of Thailand
Explore a little further than Krabi and you can expect more of the same. Lush rainforests, lofty jungle canopies, impossibly pristine beaches and remote islands that practically beg to be explored. Thailand’s party scene can be a jarring juxtaposition from the rotund Buddhas and golden temples that pepper the landscape. Though, nothing is perhaps as breath taking as the scenery or the chilli-laden curries.
