Melbourne Travel Guide

The sheer wealth of activities on offer in Melbourne isn’t surprising. Certainly not if you’ve taken more than your fair share of city breaks. A progressive food and drink scene, urban art creating shockwaves, metropolitan architecture – so far, so standard. But Melbourne somehow adds a certain something to all of the things we’ve come to expect from an urban break. So we’re up a notch before we’ve even started to roam further afield. Massive penguin colonies are a day trip away. Sydney – and all the many joys on route – are a joy-filled three day road trip away. And everything just seems EXTRA, in the best way.

Let’s take the city’s favourite open water ocean swimming spot. Melbourne’s rigged up a vintage boardwalk, popped in some stellar facilities, a gym, fitness classes and essentially made it a swish members club. Though, us regular joes can just drop in for a day. But why are we focussing on something so obscure? Well, it sums up Melbourne. The swish surface hides an accessible, achingly hip cultural experience that welcomes everyone. Which is just about the best recipe for a stellar trip to see somewhere new.

Weather

Perhaps surprisingly, Melbourne’s weather isn’t all sunshine and giggles. Summers are hot, winters are wet and chilly and spring and autumn hold few surprises. Except, of course, everything is in reverse. Summer lands at Christmas and winter is in July. The best time to visit Melbourne? Summer, though avoid the Aussie January holidays.

Discover the real Melbourne

If Melbourne’s food scene is a force to be reckoned with, just wait until you see the cocktail menu. The best bars gather together 100s – and we really mean 100s – of local spirits, brews, botanics and draughts to concoct mixes and drinks you’ll not see outside of this city. Flit from bar to bar – but do make sure you try a yaffle to soak up some of the booze.

We’ve already mentioned the urban art – but Melbourne’s also home to 100 galleries to contemplate a day or two away in. Which makes art a big part of this city. The usual city break suspects line up nicely here too. But it’s Melbourne’s unique spots you’ll want to snuffle out.

Many of you will be looking for directions to Ramsey Street – and you’d be right to track it down. But many roads point to that hallowed Neighbours turf. Perhaps of more use, are the harder to find, secret local spots that serve the best local food, are home to the most unique urban art examples or the pointers to Melbourne’s must-sees.

More of Australia

Big things happen in Australia. Whether those big things are the continent’s very amusing hand-made, massive sculptures or the huge geological must-sees, it’s a joy to take a road trip to track them all down. But that’s obviously not all. Here, you’re frankly spoiled for coastline. So do drop in to catch some waves, at least once. Vast, uncompromising and undeniably a place that practically begs to be explored. Tick off those big cities, but don’t miss the quieter rural spots, they are rustic, in THE best way.
